Biography
Born in Melbourne, Australia, 1948; educated at the University of Melbourne and Trinity College, Cambridge; research fellow at Nuffield College, Oxford, and Melbourne; lecturer, associate professor, and professor at Trinity College, Dublin, since 1979; visiting fellow at several universities in Australia and at Queen's University, Kingston, Ontario; author of five books and various other works, of which some recent examples are listed below; married, with four children.
 
Teaching interests and responsibilities
Has taught various sophister courses in Irish history in rotation, relating to the First World War, Revolution and Civil War, W. B. Yeats, Fraternity, Emigration, and Women; contributes to a senior freshman survey course on Irish history since 1800; supervises editorial projects in Irish history as undergraduate dissertations; supervises numerous graduate theses, seven of which have been published; co-ordinates dissertations for the Department of History.
