Research Projects
Project title An investigation of the factors contributing to the successful transfer of residents with intellectual disabilities from congregated to community-based living arrangements
Summary Approximately 8,000 people with intellectual disabilities in Ireland are currently in receipt of residential supports, of which a recent audit by HSE revealed almost 4,000 are supported in congregated settings. Considerable evidence is available that quality outcomes for residents in congregated settings are poorer than for those residing in community residences. While efforts are continually being made towards deinstitutionalization, however, the rate with which residents are being transferred to the community has recently been found to differ markedly nationwide. This project aims to examine factors that contribute to the successful transfer of residents from congregated to community settings in two regional areas in Ireland. Collaborators include colleagues from the National Federation of Voluntary Bodies, the Health Research Board Disability Database Unit, Dublin City University, the University of Ulster and the Welsh Centre for Learning Disabilities, Cardiff University. Dr. Linehan is Principal Investigator.
